I Need To Know What To Do

Getting licensed can feel like a maze. 50 states follow a standard “4-Step” framework.
  • 1. Verify Your Experience

Most states require 4 years of verifiable experience.

  • Pro Tip: Education (like a Construction Management degree) can often substitute for 1–3 years of field work.
  • No Experience? You can still own a company by hiring a “Qualifier”—a licensed individual who “loans” their license to your business.
  • 2. Pass the Required Exams

You typically need to pass two or three exams:

  • Business & Finance: Law, taxes, and project management.
  • Trade Exam: Technical knowledge of your specific craft (General Building, Electrical, etc.).
  • NASCLA Exam: A “national” exam accepted by multiple states (NC, GA, etc.) to help you work across state lines.
  • 3. Proof of Financials & Insurance

States want to know you won’t go bust mid-project.

  • Credit Score: A score of 660+ is often the “magic number.” If you’re below this, you’ll likely need a Surety Bond.
  • Insurance: You’ll need General Liability and Workers’ Comp (unless exempt).
  • 4. Background & Fingerprinting

Most states require a clean criminal record or an explanation for past issues, along with live-scan fingerprinting.

Our Method

  • Eligibility & Credit Check

We verify your 4 years of experience and run a credit check (660 FICO required or Surety Bond needed). We also confirm age (18+) and background check eligibility.

  • Fingerprinting

Electronic fingerprints must be submitted via Live Scan at least 5 days prior to application submission for the background check.

  • Insurance & Bonding

Secure General Liability and Workers' Comp (or exemption). If credit score is <660, a Financial Stability Bond is obtained.

  • Board Review & Issuance

We submit the package. DBPR reviews within 30-90 days. We answer any deficiencies immediately. License is issued upon approval.
